Sculptural installation work

As a metal sculptor, I find pain, suffering, and a sense of danger in my process. The act of shaping metal into meaning reflects every aspect of my approach to life. There is a necessary labor and dedicated effort required, a sense of compassion and intensity in listening that creates an intense focus. From chaos and clutter and seemingly non-descript forms a strange delicacy emerges. A deeper meaning is constructed with a material that is easily disregarded.

The unfinished, rough edges that cut, hot metal which sears through gloves, shirts, and skin, and excessive weights which demand a degree of struggle all describe a process that is a familiar struggle for me.

The desire to find humanity and a sense of sentience in the cold, unrelenting steel requires listening to the metal and allowing figures to take shape. In each piece a recognizable story emerges and the materials disappear as the details of history become insignificant. I’ve found my passion is telling these stories using a blunt brush and an uncommon pallet in an effort to better understand myself and be understood.
